Talkinglaw

helping to build a more legally-aware society

Our mission is to promote access to justice by:

  • improving public understanding of law and the legal process,

  • extending the range of legal services, and

  • building partnerships that work towards these ends

Who is the service for? - Both individuals and organisations – we aim to work with those who provide legal services (law firms and not for profit bodies (NGO’s)), those who are involved with legal education (universities, colleges and schools) and, particularly, with those who have unmet legal needs (individual clients and groups). The overall aim is to improve legal awareness and provide links between legal educators, law firms and the wider community – improving access to justice for all.

Why law? – knowing your rights and responsibilities is the starting point to becoming an active member of society – regardless of your personal circumstances. We do not intend to make everyone a lawyer (but we can point you in the right direction if that is what you want to be). Rather we want to give people a sufficient understanding of the law and legal procedures so that they are able to recognise their rights, play their part and solve problems in a constructive and helpful way. Knowledge is, after all, power!

What we offer – a support service that, working with you, analyses needs, identifies opportunities, finds possible sources of funding, builds networks, carries out training, helps with evaluation. We also design and deliver training to help law schools and law firms to develop effective and relevant pro bono schemes.
